A study shows Key nutrients in the blood are related to brain connectivity and better performance in the elderly.Focused on 32 key nutrients in the Mediterranean diet,To explore whether diet and nutrition predict the cognitive performance of older people. The findings focus on the role of food in improving cognitive abilities.
The results show that different nutritional patterns can regulate different regions of the brain,For example, Omega-3 fatty acids are associated with a healthy frontal lobe network and general intelligence, while the frontal parietal network helps focus and participate in brain-targeted behavioral activities.
These identified nutritional patterns include:
0mega-3 fatty acids, mainly found in fish, walnuts and Brussels sprouts.
0mega-6 fatty acids, mainly found in flaxseed, pumpkin seeds and pistachios.
Lycopene, a natural red pigment found in tomatoes, watermelons and some other fruits and vegetables.
Vitamin B and Vitamin D
The researchers also conducted several cognitive tests on participants.Analysis of the test results revealed that several nutrient biomarkers in the blood were associated with increased cognitive performance in specific cognitive tests. Nutrients identified include Omega-3 and 0mega-6 fatty acids, carotenoids, riboflavin, vitamin B12, vitamin D, lycopene and folic acid. The researchers also found that 0mega-3 and 0mega-6 fatty acids, as well as carotenoids, help improve the efficiency of the brain's functional network. In other words, the strength of the link between brain function networks and cognitive abilities is related to nutritional levels.
